Week 6

The following is from the BabyCenter newsletter I get each week, plus my commentary.

How your baby's growing:

The cells that will make up all of your baby's body parts and systems are dividing furiously as her body begins to take shape. Is that why I am so tired? Right now she's about the size of a small lentil bean (4 to 5 millimeters across). If you could see through your uterine wall, you'd find an overlarge head and dark spots where her eyes and nostrils are beginning to take shape. Shallow pits on the sides of her head mark her developing ears, and her arms and legs appear as protruding buds. Her hands and feet look like paddles, with thick webbing between the developing digits, but her fingers and toes will soon become more distinct. Below the opening that will later be your baby's mouth, there are small folds where her neck and lower jaw will eventually develop. (Inside, her tongue and vocal cords are just beginning to form.)Your baby's heart (which is starting to divide into the right and left chambers) is beating about 100 to 130 beats per minute — almost twice as fast as yours — and blood is beginning to circulate through her body. My acupuncturist took my pulse this week and said he can feel the baby's heart beat too. He says it feel strong which is relieving since the last babies heart stopped beating by week 9 or 10. So pray for us!! Her intestines are developing and tiny breathing passages are beginning to appear where her lungs will be. She's also starting to build muscle fibers and, halfway through this week, she'll likely start moving her tiny limbs. Cool!! Unfortunately, you'll probably have to wait until you're several weeks into your second trimester before you get to enjoy feeling your baby's calisthenics. That's OK I can be patient.

Welcome to Your Emotions

"Welcome to your emotions" is what my sister told me after I explained to her how incredibly emotional I feel. They are all so intense, deep and full. All my senses feel that way now, emotional senses, sense of smell, sight, touch and taste. It is really incredible.

Listen to what Barack Obama has to say about The Church's role in determining same sex rights. (So far he is my presidential favorite. But that is subject to change at any time. He needs to realize that gay marriage rights are really what the LGBT community needs- not civil union-they do not allow the same rights as marriage).

You can take action on this issue by not being homophobic, or standing for it in our communities also join the HRC.

Let's teach our kids somethin' different- let's teach them love, compassion and equality for all!!

Schoolin' in the womb

This baby has already been to three concerts and one radical poetry reading. We're givin' this kid the learnin' as early as possible.

1. Sonic Youth at McCarren Pool. Sonic Youth are musical genius. They played the entire Daydream Nation album. Here's clip of Teenage Riot from that show. Then, they uncharacteristically played an encore of a bunch of other stuff. We were accompanied by Aunt Renee who bought our ticket. Oh yeah, and we got see Kim dance.

2. KRS-1 at the Prospect Park bandshell. Again with Aunt Nene. Check out this video that shows when KRS-1 invited B-Boys and B-Girls up onto the stage and they rocked it! Although, I had a sneakin' suspicion I was preggers, it was the night of this show when I really realized I was most probably pregnant. I came home and started to tell Corey how I was feeling; lightheaded and fatigued all week, not to mention unlikely-for-me-cravings of sugary foods when he said, "Are you pregnant?" I told him, "I think so". I took the test the next day to confirm. POSITIVE!!

3. The Police at Giant's Stadium. Don't ask me how much I paid for tickets. They played Driven to Tears. They played Walkin' on the Moon---such a romantic song!! Yep, Nene was there too. Sorry no links cause all the You-Tube recordings from the recent shows stink. But some good ones from shows in the 80's, fans should go to You-tube to play.

4. Heard Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez's beautiful, radical, political poetry at SummerStage in Central Park. Well, not radical to us radicals, but maybe radical to the rest of the world. Corey, Renee and I attended. I wonder if Sonia Sanchez knows she is a goddess whose words reach in and caress the hearts of those who hear her. Sonia poem link is from the day we saw her. What do you get when you put an African-American man and Italian-American women alone together in the bedroom?

An Afro-Italian BABY!!!! It is inevitable. Our cultures are too fertile for anything else. LOL

He or she is only the size of a sesame seed! That wittle.

To be honest, I was really worried that another pregnancy would be hard for me, since the last one didn't last, and I am really not all that young any more (36 in November). We were going to wait until the honeymoon to try again, but see, there was this one night which lead us to this happy surprise!!!




The baby's little brain is beginning to develop and for some reason that makes me have ta' pee...be right back.




Ah, OK I feel much better. Why I have to pee so much is beyond me but medical science seems to have reason. It's mostly because the amount of blood in my body is increasing dramatically which leads to a lot of extra fluid getting processed through my kidneys and ending up in my bladder. It gets worse especially at night. Last night I was up at least 5 times to pee. WOW.
